For a safe and organized storage experience, always follow these tips to ensure your items remain in good condition.

Storage Tips for Safe and Effective Packing
After selecting the right storage facility, it's crucial to pack your belongings properly to prevent damage. Here are some expert tips:

Use Proper Containers:
Store items in boxes, totes, or specialized containers for better protection. Invest in materials designed to safeguard your belongings during transit and while in storage.
Prepare Appliances:
Clean, disinfect, and dry appliances like refrigerators, freezers, and stoves. For appliances with doors, leave them slightly ajar to prevent odor and mildew.
Prevent Rust:
Wipe metal surfaces with oil to prevent rust and deterioration.
Clothing Care:
Hang clothing before folding them into cartons. Ensure all linens, drapes, and clothes are clean and dry to avoid pests.
Dishes and Glassware:
Wrap fragile items like dishes and glassware in bubble wrap, and pack similar items together in boxes filled with packing peanuts, bubble wrap, or newspaper.
Furniture Storage:
Stack lightweight chairs seat-to-seat, but avoid stacking other furniture. Cover upholstery with cotton dust covers.
Holiday Decorations:
Store holiday items in their original cartons. Wrap delicate items in bubble wrap or newspaper.
Music Items:
Store CDs, tapes, and records in boxes or airtight cartons to protect them from damage.
Electronics Protection:
Cover computer screens and large TVs with dust covers and wrap in bubble wrap if stored near other items.
Books and Documents:
Pack books and documents flat, filling empty spaces in boxes with bubble wrap or newspaper.
Furniture Disassembly:
Disassemble furniture, then place the pieces on corrugated cardboard or a plastic sheet before storing on a pallet.
Lamp Storage:
Wrap lamp bases in padding and store the shade and base separately.
Clean Electronics:
Ensure all electrical items are cleaned and dried before storage.
Prohibited Storage Items Some items are prohibited in storage, including:

  • Live animals
  • Perishables
  • Liquids
  • Explosives
  • Flammable liquids and fuels
  • Toxic materials
Additionally, items requiring a controlled environment cannot be stored.

Helpful Tips for Parking Your RV, Boat, or Commercial Equipment at a Storage Facility

Choose the Right Facility

Select a facility that meets your specific needs, such as oversized spaces, covered parking, or climate-controlled options for sensitive items. Ensure the facility has robust security features like surveillance cameras, gated access, and proper lighting.

Measure Your Vehicle or Equipment

Before choosing a parking space, measure your RV, boat, or commercial equipment, including any attachments (antennas, trailers, etc.), to ensure it fits comfortably in the space provided.

Prepare Your Vehicle or Equipment

RVs and Boats:
Empty water tanks, disconnect batteries, and check tire pressure. For boats, cover it and remove any items prone to weather damage.
Commercial Equipment:
Top off fluids, disconnect batteries for long-term storage, and secure any moving parts.

Consider a Covered or Indoor Space

If possible, choose covered or indoor parking to protect your asset from the elements, such as rain, UV exposure, and snow, especially if storing for an extended period.

Secure Your Property

Lock all doors, windows, and compartments. For boats, remove valuables and electronics to prevent theft. For commercial equipment, use additional locks or immobilizers to secure machinery, and always secure your hitch with a coupler or hitch lock.

Inspect the Space Before Parking

Ensure the parking space offers enough clearance and easy access. Check for potential hazards like low-hanging wires or uneven surfaces, and make sure there is enough space for maneuvering.

Follow Facility Rules and Regulations

Each facility has its own rules regarding parking, access hours, and maintenance. Familiarize yourself with these to avoid penalties or issues.

Perform Routine Maintenance

Regularly inspect your vehicle or equipment for issues like tire pressure or leaks. Routine checks help avoid problems when you’re ready to use it again.

Use Protective Covers

Invest in high-quality, weather-resistant covers to protect your RV, boat, or equipment from dirt, debris, and weather damage. Ensure the cover fits securely to prevent wind damage.

Keep Records Handy

Keep copies of your insurance, registration, and storage agreement easily accessible. Also, note the facility's contact information for quick reference in case of emergencies.

By following these tips, you can ensure your RV, boat, or commercial equipment stays in good condition while stored at a parking facility. Let me know if you need further advice!
